Event Details

The aim of this workshop is to help participants develop their communication and relationship building skills for gathering and imparting information during an internal audit assignment.

Who should attend

  • New entrants to internal audit who do not necessarily anticipate remaining in internal audit as their chosen career path
  • Those seeking an initial taster of the work of internal audit
  • Specialists who join or are seconded to the internal audit team to assist with specific projects or assignments that also require other technical expertise, for example engineering, health and safety or IT professionals.

This workshop will be suitable for those who have already had exposure to business and organisational practices through work experience.

 

How will this workshop benefit you?
After completion you will be able to:

  • understand why good communication skills are important
  • understand how to use different communication skills across a range of situations
  • use your communication skills to develop better internal auditor-client relationships
  • develop a plan for enhancing your skills in communication and client-auditor relations and apply this to real situations at work.

 

Workshop programme
You will be expected to participate fully throughout this workshop. There is a combination of role play and training activities aimed at developing your communication skills in an enjoyable and relaxed environment. The workshop will cover the following topics:

 

principles of effective communication  

  • communication purposes, media, styles, results and process

 

building effective relationships with clients  

  • effective and ineffective relationships
  • expectations of internal auditors
  • improving relationships

 

interviewing skills

  • types of interview
  • structure of interviews
  • types of questions

 

negotiating skills

  • structure of negotiations
  • preparing for negotiations
  • win-win and other outcomes
  • developing the win-win approach to negotiations

 

reporting and presentation skills

  • critiquing an audit report
  • preparing for oral presentations
  • making a presentation and handling questions.

 

Pre-work
Before the workshop, you are asked to familiarise yourself with the issues discussed in the complementary study text and complete the preliminary assessment for your level of skills. You are also asked to reflect on situations, either current or anticipated where you may need to enhance your communication skills.
