In the first of our strategic series of events, we invite you to take stock of what this era of austerity will mean for internal audit.
The post-election dust may still be settling, but the challenge is clear – weathering the financial outlook for the new Parliament means that our organisation must squeeze maximum value from every pound it spends.
Don’t miss this opportunity to help your organisation rise to the challenge. Take the time to step back with colleagues and speakers from across the public and private sectors to consider how best audit can help restore prosperity from austerity.
Outline of the event
Join us between 09:00 and 09:30 for registration, refreshments and an excellent opportunity for delegates to network with committee members and other fellow professionals.
The day will begin at 09:30 with a welcome address and introduction from Stuart Silcox, the Chair of the Welsh District Society. The main business of the day will consist of a series of short sector-specific presentations interspersed with participative workshops aimed at identifying the opportunities and threats and potential ways forward for the internal auditing profession across Wales. Speakers will provide invaluable insights into the effects of the economic downturn from internal audit and organisational management perspectives. Some speakers will also outline some of the initiatives they have been involved in including shared services and closer collaboration between internal audit units. This will undoubtedly generate lively debate about how the profession in Wales should respond to the challenges faced by all of the business community of “delivering more with less”.
To set the tone for the day, a Welsh Assembly Government Member will talk about the Welsh economic context and the changes facing all business organisations. A senior officer from the Welsh Assembly Government will also outline the impact upon and the role for internal audit in the forthcoming change agenda.
Our sector specific speakers include:
Local Government:
Mark Thomas - Head of Internal Audit,
Risk Management and Performance Management, Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council
Andrew Watham - Head of Internal Audit,
Newport County Borough Council and Monmouthshire County Council
Central Government:
Joyce Drummond-Hill - Head of Internal Audit, HM Prison Service
NHS Wales:
Head of Internal Audit - speaker to be confirmed

The breakout sessions will consist of facilitated table discussions around the issues and potential solutions to the challenges raised by our thought provoking speakers. The discussions and ideas will be captured as we progress through the day and the outcomes will be used to help shape future events.
The closing session will commence by 15:00 for a 15:30 departure. Lunch is included.
Fees: £35 + VAT for IIA members and non-members.
