Insights for internal auditors particularly in the light of the Credit Crunch
and the turbulent market conditions

There is much for internal auditors to think about in the light of current
developments. The boardroom agenda is changing. Business models
have to be challenged as is the risk universe in both the public and
private sectors. Internal audit resources will increasingly be stretched as
Non executive directors will seek more assurance on key issues. Merely
adopting the audit approach selected a few months ago may not be
good enough. The economic outlook needs to be responded to as do
increased fraud, ethics related, financial instrument counterparty, rogue
trader, regulatory, credit and going concern risks.

Other relevant developments include the impact on internal auditors of
changes in directors’ responsibilities arising from the Companies Act
2006, revised EC Directives affecting internal control reporting and a key
FSA tribunal case affecting issuer companies. There is much to consider
in terms of the scope, timing and nature of internal audit procedures.

Speaker: Martyn Jones is National Audit Technical Partner at Deloitte. He is also
a member of the ICAEW’s Technical Strategy Board and of its Council.
He chairs the ICAEW Ethics Standards Committee and is a member of
the CBI’s influential Companies Committee. He led the ICAEW team
that produced Implementing Turnbull.
