He also undertakes volunteer work in the wider academic community and other professional bodies.

Chris has worked in Her Majesty’s Treasury for over 18 years and is currently Head of its Treasury Group Internal Audit. He was one of the first to work on setting in place Government Internal Audit Standards in the guise of the old Government Internal Audit Manual. Prior to moving to concentrate fully on his Head of Internal Audit role, it is fitting that the last job he worked on was the project to revise the government standards which resulted in the adoption of the IIA International Standards for Internal Auditing.

Over the last few years he has also been closely involved in developing guidance on corporate governance, audit committees and the statement on internal control. As an ambassador for the profession in the public sector he has travelled widely to give presentations on internal audit.  He has also been instrumental in ensuring that EU guidance on internal audit is fit for the UK government.

In that time she has organised events, including the Districts annual conference, and has been particularly successful in sourcing influential speakers for Scottish District events. She has published articles in the IIA magazine and other publications. Vicky is widely respected throughout the profession and speaks regularly on internal audit subjects.  Her commitment and reputation attracts others to contribute to events that she has a role in planning and organising. She is also Chair of the Insurance Special Interest Group.

Volunteer of the Year 2008 - Runner Up
Keith Labbett FIIA

He was the Institute's Chief Examiner for a 15 year period he has been a member of Council, Technical Director and Chair or the South West District.

In making his presentations Mr Ratcliffe described the student winners as representing the future of the profession. Quoting author Edith Wharton – “There are two ways of spreading light - to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it” – he described the Institutes’ volunteers as the “light” of the profession and the Institute.

“The daily working lives of many internal auditors is probably a lot busier these days (and let’s not forget that internal auditors like every other employee are feeling the effects of the recession). But still our Volunteers give their time, their skill and their enthusiasm,” said Mr Ratcliffe.

The Institute is extremely proud of hard work and dedication of all students and volunteers and would like to extend special congratulations all winners and nominees.

Background on Awards:

Peter Hook and Charles Duly prizes are awarded to the top performing students, who achieved the highest marks of all candidates who successfully completed their last exams during 2008, in the Institutes Advanced Diploma in Internal Auditing and Management and Diploma in Internal Audit Practice respectively.

Volunteer of the Year Award recognises individual members who have made a significant contribution to the IIA as a volunteer. It is one of the ways that the IIA says ‘thank you’ to those who generously give their time, energy and skills to the work of the Institute.

The JJ Morris Distinguished Service Award is made in memory of Joe Morris. It recognises individual members who, over time, have given unusual and outstanding service to the profession of internal auditing through participation in the activities of the IIA. The efforts, accomplishments and extraordinary dedication of these individuals are recognised as having had a major impact on the development of the IIA and the profession of internal auditing.
