2008 Volunteer and Student Award Winners Announced

Winners of the IIA's Volunteer and Student Awards for 2008 were announced at an awards luncheon held at Stationers' Hall in London recently. President of the IIA Simon D’Arcy presented the winners with their awards.

JJ Morris Distinguished Service Award
This year’s winner was Professor Andrew D Chambers, BA, CEng, FCCA, FCA, FBCS, CITP, FRSA, FIIA.
Professor Chambers has been a member of the IIA - UK and Ireland for over 34 years and has made an immense contribution to the profession of internal auditing. To name only a few of his achievements: He was a member of the IIA’s education committee in the crucial run up to the development of the first Advanced Diploma in Internal Auditing and Management syllabus; a founder and long standing member of the IIA’s research committee; he served as a UK council director and as a director of the global Institute; he has acted as a chairman and member on numerous IIA committees and as an advocate for the profession in external committees; in 1983 he became the UK’s first professor of internal auditing; he has authored two text books ‘Internal Auditing’ and ‘Computer Auditing’ - which became best sellers in their fields.
This award is made in memory of Joe Morris. Joe was a member of the Institute from 1979 until his death in 1998, and was an active IIA volunteer for many years.

Volunteer of the Year Award
This year’s winner was Robert Beattie, of the Scottish District.
Robert has been involved with the Scottish District Committee for four years and has been Chair of the Committee for the past two and half. His achievements both for the District and the Institute are vast. He has introduced a number of key organisations in Scotland into Group Membership, including British Telecom, Standard Life and National Bank of Australia - comprising over 140 members. Robert has chaired the National IIA Annual Conference and was a significant influence on the development of the Scottish Annual Dinner and Scottish District Annual Conference. He had an important impact on the introduction of the Heads of Internal Audit Service (HIAS) Forums into Scotland and established the District Society Newsletter.
The runners up for this award were Steve Clare, of the NorthWest District (pictured left) and Nigel Lewis, also of the NorthWest District (pictured right).

The Charles Duly Prize
This prize is awarded to the candidate achieving the highest marks in the Diploma in Internal Audit Practice.
The Charles Duly Prize for 2007 was awarded to Heather Wheatley.

Peter Hook Prize
This prize is awarded to candidates achieving the highest marks in the Advanced Diploma in Internal Auditing and Management.
This year there was one winner and two runners up.
The winner of Peter Hook Prize for 2007 was Joanne Rowe (employer: Fortis Bank, London). Joanne was the winner Charles Duly Prize in 2005.
The two runners up for the Peter Hook prize 2007 were Aidan Allcock (employer: HBOS, Edinburgh) and Mark William Obst (employer: Grant Thornton, London).
