This increase reflects the growing reliance of organisations on their internal audit functions, to help manage risk and maintain sound systems of internal control. The IIA's global growth also continues and has now exceeded 130,000 members in 165 countries.
Internal auditors look at the major risks facing their organisation, and provide their audit committee with an independent view of how well these risks are being managed. Since the revision of the Combined Code, audit committees are now responsible for reviewing the effectiveness of their internal audit function. This has contributed to increased demand for internal auditors as companies realise that along with the board, senior management and external auditors, a professional, well-resourced internal audit function is an integral part of an effective corporate governance framework.
The IIA named Christian Price, a Regional Auditor for DFS furniture as their 8000th member. He commented:
"I am currently working as a regional auditor for the DFS Furniture Company, where I have been responsible for carrying out a range of audit assignments across the group of stores and head office, working independently and also closely with our team of 16 Internal Auditors.
Whilst I have gained first hand practical experience in my role I am confident that the Institute of Internal Auditors can offer me the opportunity to further develop my career with my current employer and enable me to become a more competent audit professional, which is why I have chosen to study for the IIA's Diploma.
The flexibility of being able to complete my studies at home appealed to me greatly as it enables me to study at a pace that suits my personal circumstances, I'm looking forward to receiving my study material and completing the first of my examinations in November."
Alec Richmond, President of the IIA commented, "The continued growth of the Institute reflects the fundamental importance of properly conducted internal auditing in the UK & Ireland in today's complex environment. Organisations need to know that they can rely on internal auditors who are properly qualified, working to a set of International Standards and capable of delivering robust, independent opinions to support the Board and the Audit Committee. The IIA is delighted to welcome Christian Price to the IIA and I hope he enjoys a fantastic professional career in internal auditing."
