Distinguished Service Award
The JJ Morris Distinguished Service Award recognises individual members who, over time, have given unusual and outstanding service to the profession of internal auditing through participation in the activities of the IIA. The JJ Morris Award for Distinguished Service - Winner 2008 - Chris Butler MIIA FIIA
Chris has been a member of the IIA for over 28 years, qualifying as an MIIA in 1984. During his association with the IIA he has served as a member of Council and Chairman of the Audit Committee. He has been a member of the IIA’s Standards and Guidelines Committee, Technical Development Committee and Education Committee. Previously an IIA examiner, he is currently a member of the Professional Development Committee and the Examinations Review Advisory Board. He also undertakes volunteer work in the wider academic community and other professional bodies.
Chris has worked in Her Majesty’s Treasury for over 18 years and is currently Head of its Treasury Group Internal Audit. He was one of the first to work on setting in place Government Internal Audit Standards in the guise of the old Government Internal Audit Manual. Prior to moving to concentrate fully on his Head of Internal Audit role, it is fitting that the last job he worked on was the project to revise the government standards which resulted in the adoption of the IIA International Standards for Internal Auditing.
Over the last few years he has also been closely involved in developing guidance on corporate governance, audit committees and the statement on internal control. As an ambassador for the profession in the public sector he has travelled widely to give presentations on internal audit. He has also been instrumental in ensuring that EU guidance on internal audit is fit for the UK government.
