Our executive team

The Chartered IIA's operations are delivered by a team of nearly 50 staff, mostly based at our offices in Clapham, London.


Dr Ian Peters MBE, Chief Executive

Updated Ian Peters

Ian has held the position of Chief Executive of the Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors since June 2009. He was previously Director of External Affairs at the Engineering Employers Federation (EEF) from 2001 and before that Deputy Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce. He has also worked for the Confederation of British Industry where he led their work on Small and Medium Enterprises and for international PR agency Burson-Marsteller.

Ian chairs the Independent Monitoring Panel of the UK Chartered Banker Professional Standards Board and has served on a number of government committees.  He holds a BA in Geography from the University of Lancaster and a PhD for research into Small Businesses from the University of Southampton.

In 2015 Ian was awarded an MBE for services to regulatory reform and in recognition of his work as a member of the UK Government's Regulatory Policy Committee (RPC).


Ann Cantillon, Professional Development Director

Ann CantillonAnn's role is to lead the development of the IIA's training and learning programmes. This includes:

  • Identifying opportunities for the expansion and development of the IIA's learning and training programmes
  • Creating tailored training solutions to meet the needs of the IIA's diverse customer base
  • Designing and developing training and learning materials
  • Delivering and ongoing quality assurance of training courses and events. 

Stephen Crowe, Finance Director 

Stephen CroweStephen oversees the work of the finance and office services departments. His responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring accurate records of all financial transactions are kept
  • Producing the annual financial statements, monthly accounts and management information
  • Monitoring performance against budgets and producing financial forecasts 
  • Managing working capital, cash-flow and the IIA's investment portfolio 
  • Managing the general maintenance, security and day to day running ofthe IIA's business premises and systems
  • Ensuring compliance with health & safety regulations. 

Phil Gray, Communications and Marketing Director

Updated Phil GrayPhil leads the IIA's corporate communications and marketing activities:

  • Planning and managing the Institute's media relations activity 
  • Developing strategy for new member marketing and member communications
  • Overseeing the marketing function
  • Responsibility for the institute's website and digital communications
  • Liaison with the regional network.
