How to apply
Two stages of the submission process
1. Initial submission
In the initial submission, you need to complete only two of the 16 knowledge areas. You also need to submit your CV showing that you have five years experience in internal auditing.
We will give you feedback on the evidence provided within four weeks and advise you on requirements for the final submission.
2. Full submission
The final submission should address all 16 of the knowledge areas, including those in the initial submission. There is no time limit for making the final submission, but bear in mind that you need to complete the qualification within three years of registration.
We will confirm the result of your final submission within six weeks.
Please submit your form(s) to studentsupport@iia.org.uk and copy in your signatory. Your signatory must reply or forward the email to us also.
Word count
The recommended word count is about 500 words (not including the evidence section) for each knowledge area and 8,000 overall. Excessive word count (more than 8,800) in the final submission will result in automatic rejection.
Please note the word count in each of the 16 knowledge areas.
Evidence
We don't need to see the source evidence of your experiential learning. However, your signatory should have access to this information.
The submission sections on evidence sources should be clearly laid out, and any references to sources in the explanation section should be clearly indicated using square bracket notation eg [1. Audit report] or [3.2 Memo].
Remember, you are attempting to demonstrate how you have acquired and fulfilled the formal learning requirements through professional practice. You are not expected to set out what you know as if you were answering an exam question. Instead, you must justify how the stated evidence demonstrates that they have the specified learning to the required standards.
Assessment criteria
The assessor will compare your evidence and reflective statements with the learning requirements of the syllabus.
Modules achieved through APL will not be graded other than either Pass or Fail. In order to achieve a Pass, you must demonstrate that you have a sound grasp of the required learning overall and are able to apply it to professional practice.
Each of the 16 knowledge areas will be given equal weighting and graded from 0 to 5 as follows:
IIA Diploma
If the candidate has demonstrated:
- limited knowledge of the required content
- full knowledge of the required content
- clear understanding of the knowledge, as shown in their explanations
- sound application of their learning to effective delivery of internal audit services
- an ability to analyse and select from alternative approaches, and
- an ability to generate original ideas and apply critical thinking
IIA Advanced Diploma
If the candidate has demonstrated:
- limited knowledge of the required
- full knowledge of the required content, and clear understanding of the knowledge, as shown in their explanations
- sound application of their learning to effective delivery of internal audit services
- an ability to analyse and select from alternative approaches
- an ability to generate original ideas and apply critical thinking, and
- an ability to address complex situations independently where a high degree of critical awareness is needed
To achieve an overall Pass, a minimum of 48 points out of 80 is required (60%).
Authentication of submissions
For your final submission, your signatory must view each piece of evidence and email us to confirm that they believe it be authentic.
The signatory will normally be your line manager and hold appropriate professional qualifications. Where either of these conditions can not be met, an explanation must be provided.
Your results
Results will include whether the module award is a Pass or a Fail. Where students are awarded a Fail, a mark breakdown and brief commentary will be supplied as feedback on the submission.
There is no route of appeal for APL submissions. However, students may elect to revise their submission and to make a new submission at any time, but each submission will attract an application fee.
