James Paterson PIIA With a career in both finance and human resources, James was also the head of internal audit for AstraZeneca PLC from 2002-2009. James has been training, consulting and coaching HIAs and their teams since 2010 and runs a number of key courses for the IIA, including the Head of Audit Induction Masterclass, Root cause analysis for internal Audit and Assurance Mapping. James was a member of the IIA Council and has been invited as a speaker at three IIA International conferences. James has had numerous articles published and is the author of the book Lean Auditing, published by J Wiley in 2015.

An up-date on the “Auditing Culture” course. With remote working, the need for quick decisions and a requirement to carefully manage income and expenses, what is happening to the culture of your IA team and organisation more generally? Using several well-known cultural models learn about how external changes and internal pressures can impact culture at an overall level and also at the level of specific departments. Examine which cultural changes are most likely to be damaging to risk culture and what to do about it, either through influencing or through paying greater attention to this in audits.

  • the link between risk appetite and risk culture and the problem of finding suitable criteria when looking into cultural issues.

  • Understand the IIA guidance on auditing culture (which James contributed to):

  • paying attention to audit behaviours and management attitude towards audits
  • root cause analysis and culture
  • using various models to describe, with precision, key culture changes
  • next steps to prioritise and pitfalls to manage (culture work can touch upon political factors).
