James Paterson PIIA With a career in both finance and human resources, James was also the head of internal audit for AstraZeneca PLC from 2002-2009. James has been training, consulting and coaching HIAs and their teams since 2010 and runs a number of key courses for the IIA, including the Head of Audit Induction Masterclass, Root cause analysis for internal Audit and Assurance Mapping. James was a member of the IIA Council and has been invited as a speaker at three IIA International conferences. James has had numerous articles published and is the author of the book Lean Auditing, published by J Wiley in 2015.

This one-day course will give an updated look at how to maintain wellbeing and manage yourself and others in these challenging times:

  • understanding what happens to yourself and other people in challenging times
  • fundamentals of well-being and how to find it when you are so busy
  • see how other pressures/priorities and budget constraints can affect your ability to get things done and finding ways to get your concerns “on the radar screen”
  • practical strategies to diffuse conflicts before they become damaging to you or your IA team.

What will I learn?

Upon completion you will be able to:

  • clearly understand why/how behaviour changes under pressure
  • understand some psychological fundamentals
  • understand the fundamentals of well-being and stress management
  • understand the political realities of the new environment and how others will judge what matters
  • know how to adapt your influencing style to suit the new environment, without losing your principles
  • learn the LIM influencing model/how to overcome resistance to change.

  • understanding why COVID19 is making things so challenging for organisations and individuals and how this changes morale, culture and behaviour
  • understanding influencing without authority essentials
  • understanding psychological fundamentals, self-justification, confirmation bias, group dynamics, managing upwards with authority
  • seeing how perspective matters
  • understanding well-being essentials – checking your stress levels
  • understanding your own influencing preferences and how these will/won’t help in the current environment – thinking about changes you could make
  • avoid solutions by formula, how to “read” realities and adapt your proposed solutions using the LIM approach
  • be able to see organisational realities and office politics in a constructive light
  • have a clear action plan for your return back at work.
